4 steps you can take to mitigate the effects of loadshedding this winter

The energy crisis in South Africa is far from over and as we approach winter the loadshedding situation will undoubtedly get worse before it gets better. While getting completely off the grid and not having to rely on Eskom for your power is an ideal scenario, this is not always feasible and is indeed a costly exercise. There are however several more affordable ways to mitigate the inconvenience and disruptions caused by load shedding.

  1. Invest in solar power

Solar power systems are a reliable source of electricity, even during Cape Town’s winter months. A full home solar system is a great way to become energy independent and is worth considering as an investment that will pay itself off in the long run. This can however also be out of reach for many cash-strapped South African households…but the good news is that there are ways to utilise solar on a smaller scale. For example, a solar geyser can be a large energy saver and so can solar lighting.

  1. Backup power options

Whether it’s in the form of a generator or an inverter to run essential appliances, a UPS for internet and home office needs, or even a power bank for smaller devices it is becoming essential to have some backup power supply on hand as the loadshedding stages increase and power shortages intensify. A cost-effective lighting solution to consider is independent LED light bulbs that contain batteries that charge when there is power and then remain functional when the power is off.

  1. Switch to more energy-efficient appliances

Replacing older appliances such as washing machines or fridges with more energy-efficient appliances can help reduce your power consumption and lower your electricity bills, as well as help to reduce the strain on the grid during periods of high demand. Investing in a gas stove or gas geyser means you won’t be reliant on electricity and can have access to hot water and cooking facilities when there is loadshedding.

  1. Insulate Your Home

In order to keep your house warm during the upcoming winter months it is advisable to make sure your house is properly insulated and sealed. Inspecting windows, doors and roofing to make sure there are no significant gaps where cool air can escape or enter the room is important. You can also have insulation material added between your ceiling and roof to seal it off properly and keep you warm and cosy. Another great idea is to install a fireplace that can heat your home despite long hours of loadshedding.

Whether it’s installing a gas or solar geyser, improving your home’s insulation, or installing a fireplace, ADP Construction can assist you in mitigating the effects of loadshedding.
